In 2006, Elizabeth was a junior in high school in Waterford, Virginia and becoming a doctor was on her radar. On a whim, she and her mother, a physical therapist, emailed a small hospital in Malawi to ask if they could come for the summer to help. Six months later, the reply was: “Yes, come.” And they went, providing physical therapy and taking vital signs all summer long.

Rice 360º Institute for Global Health's innovation saves babies in Malawi

Rice University bioengineer and global-health pioneer Rebecca Richards-Kortum has received a coveted MacArthur Fellowship. Richards-Kortum, the founder and director of Rice’s award-winning Rice 360º Institute for Global Health, is the first Houston scientist, the first Houston woman and the first Rice faculty member to win the award.
